7 May – Sam Raimi's "The Evil Dead" has since become a cult hit following its release in 1981, and the success of the original led to two sequels, known as "The Evil Dead II" and "The Evil Dead III: Army of Darkness" respectively, as well as a stage musical and more recently announced, an upcoming remake, for which Raimi is now engaged in a legal battle over. The principal photography of the Raimi and Campbell-produced remake took place in New Zealand and is expected to be wrapped up in July. However, it seems that the film would not see release anytime soon this year as according to Deadline, a legal fight for the rights of the sequel is taking place. The story goes that Renaissance Pictures, formed by Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Robert Tapert in 1979 for the original "Evil Dead", has sued Award Pictures, a below-the-radar production company for trademark infringement of "The Evil Dead" label, as Award Pictures' has been known to be producing another sequel, titled "The Evil Dead 4". Award Pictures defended themselves by saying that a published remark in 2000 by Raimi stating that "we're never going to do a sequel", was a "public declaration by the defendant that they have abandoned the alleged 'mark' on "The Evil Dead" sequel years ago." However, in a court filing by Renaissance on 2 May, Raimi claimed that Award's "The Evil Dead 4" conflicted with Raimi's plans for the remake of the "Evil Dead" franchise. The remake will be directed by Fede Alvarez and scheduled to be released on 12 April 2013, but will feature a female version of Ash's character instead.
