11 Mar – Tired of blockbusters and rom-coms? Try something a little out of the ordinary for your next movie outing. Introducing the Singapore Cult & Underground Film Festival (SCUFF) 2016, taking place from 24 to 27 March at The Projector. A total of four independent movies, consisting of the horror comedy and documentary genres, will be screened at the upcoming festival. The first in the line-up is NC16-rated New Zealand horror comedy, "Housebound", which tells the story of a young woman who is placed on home detention in a house that may or may not be haunted. It will be screened at 8.30pm on 24 March (Thursday). Voted as one of the best horror movies of 2015, "Goodnight Mommy", an NC-16 rated Austrian horror movie about a pair of twin boys unsure if the woman beneath the bandages is really their mother, will play next at 8.30pm on 25 March (Friday). Showing at 5.00pm on 26 March (Saturday) is a rated R21 documentary called "Remake, Remix, Ripoff". The movie took seven years to make. It touches on "Yeşilçam", the Turkish movie industry, which was one of the most prolific production industries in the world during the '60s to the '80s. Last but not least is "Raiders!", to be screened at 5.00pm on 27 March (Sunday). It is a PG13 documentary on a fan film of Steven Spielberg's 1981 movie, "Raiders of the Lost Ark", that took over 30 years to finish. The tickets for the movies are priced at SGD13 each. SCUFF 2016 is organised by SCUM Cinemas (Society for Cult and Underground Movies), a film society that focuses on "the bizarre and the weird in reel life". The film festival first emerged last year under the name SCUMScope 2015, touted as Singapore's first alternative film festival, which screened a mix of art documentary, '80s B grade horror movies and 7 genre-defying short stories. Despite the name change to SCUFF this year, it of course still maintains its focus on truly unique independent movies.
