Netflix to launch in Singapore by next year

"Return of the Dragon" is one of the movies viewable on Netflix.

10 Sep – Starting from next year, Singaporeans will have more flexibility and choices when it comes to watching movies.

Netflix, Inc. has announced that Singapore will be of the Asian countries it plans to launch its Internet television network Netflix in by early next year. This is part of the company's move to complete its global rollout by the end of 2016.

Apart from Singapore, Netflix will also be available in Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea.

"The combination of increasing Internet speeds and ubiquity of connected devices provides consumers with the anytime, anywhere ability to enjoy their favorite TV shows and movies on the Netflix service," said Reed Hastings, chief executive officer of Netflix, in a press statement. Hastings added that the four markets represent those trends well.

Netflix provides on-demand Internet streaming media, which include television shows and movies. Members will get to watch both old and new TV shows and movies of various genres, such as "Cheers", "Orange is the New Black" and "Daredevil" as well as Hong Kong's 1972 martial arts movie "Return of the Dragon", South Korea's 2003 thriller "Oldboy" and Hollywood's 2014 neo-noir thriller "Nightcrawler"

It also produces its own original TV series, "Marco Polo" for example, which was shot mostly at Malaysia's Pinewood Studios, and original movies, such as Angelina Jolie's upcoming movie about Cambodia's Khmer Rouge regime.

Founded in 1997 by Hastings along with Marc Randolph, Netflix has grown to become the world's leading Internet television network available in over 50 countries with over 65 million subscribers.
