11 Mar - Bong Joon-ho became the first Korean director to top the US box office with "Mickey 17", but that's not saying a lot.

It was revealed that the movie, starring Robert Pattinson, opened in the US to only USD 19.1 million, which is a low number compared to most other number one debuting films. However, due to an already sluggish weekend, the film was able to become the number one movie at the box office.

The result is much different to the film's reception in Bong's own native country, South Korea, where the movie made USD 11.4 million, bringing a global cume of USD 53.3 million.

"Mickey 17" has to do even better than that in the weeks to come, seeing that the sci-fi movie, which is Bong's first Hollywood film since the success of "Parasite", had cost USD 118 million to make sans marketing.

It is noted that the same weekend last year saw the release of "Dune: Part Two", which made USD 82.5 million for its US opening.

Meanwhile, Marvel's " Captain America: Brave New World" earned another UD 8.5 million in the US and USD 9.2 million overseas, bringing a global tally of USD 370.8 million.
