23 Mar – Last night the star-studded social event of the year, the Sapura and Kencana Red Ribbon GP Ball 2012 took place in the Grand Ballroom of Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, but the gasps of shock elicited by the attendees were not from good vibes.
During the opening speech which saw the presence of "Midnight In Paris" star Owen Wilson along with other high profile celebrities, the Malaysian emcee of the night had gotten the actor's last name wrong and introduced Owen Wilson as 'Owen Williams' instead.
Her stumble went along the lines of, "It is a great honour to introduce my favourite actor, Owen Williams!"
Collective gasps were heard all around the hall, and there was even someone who exclaimed, "How can she get his name wrong if he's her favourite actor? Did she even rehearse for this properly?"
Shortly after, his publicist/representative was seen having an intense conversation with one of the organisers present at the floor.
Needless to say, it was an embarrassing incident for many as the esteemed guests for the event were Oscar-winner Adrien Brody, actress Camilla Belle ("10,000 BC"), "The X Factor" songstress Leona Lewis, Real Madrid footballers Michel Salgado and Fernando Morientes, F1 stars Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg, Pastor Maldonado, Narain Karthikeyan, Vitaly Petrov, Heikki Kovalainen, Nico Hulkenberg, Timo Glock, Charles Pic, Jerome D'Ambrosio, Jules Bianchi, Esteban Gutierrez, Sebastien Buemi, as well as former heavyweight boxing champion David Haye.
The VVIP guests of honour for the event were the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, his wife the Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong, Prime Minister YAB Dato Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
Among the highlights of the night was a performance by Leona Lewis, who serenaded the crowd with her popular songs such as "Better In Time" and "Bleeding Love".
The Sapura & Kencana Petroleum Red Ribbon GP Ball 2012 was held to raise funds for Malaysian AIDS Foundation and Global Poverty Project in conjunction with Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix.
