"MI:4" clears!

28 Dec – It seems that the "Mission Impossible" franchise has struck gold with "The Incredibles" director, Brad Bird, with moviegoers flocking to the their nearest screens to watch Academy Award-winning actor Tom Cruise reprise his role as secret agent Ethan Hunt. Although the movie is falling behind its prior three instalments at a total of U.S. $61.9 million, there is no qualm that it will easily finish ahead of "Mission Impossible 3" soon, if the positive ratings by critics are any indication. Coming in second is "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows", while the highly-anticipated feel-bad movie of Christmas, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", the adaptation of Stieg Larsson's dark novel opened to third place, according to online tracker, Box Office Mojo.

There is nothing that Tom Cruise a.k.a. Ethan Hunt can't climb, including the Burj Khalifa and the weekend box office charts.
For Malaysia, "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" continued to take the box office earnings for the Christmas weekend box office charts, while "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" opened in second place. Robert Downey Jr.'s Holmes was always more action than mystery, and when pitted against Cruise's death-defying self-performed stunts, it is hardly surprising that it fell short. Third place is nabbed by the local movie "Suatu Malam Kubur Berasap" from the horror genre, hence, making it standout among the holiday season offerings for the weekend just gone.

Despite the hype surrounding "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" and the early opening of "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol", the latter managed to maintain its position at the top of the weekend box office, while the former debuted at second place. Following third is "Alvin And The Chipmunks 3", making this a week of sequel-watching for Singapore.

Other new releases and sneak peeks last week in Malaysia include, "The Darkest Hour", "Jack And Jill", "2359", "Don 2", "Rajapattai", "Suatu Malam Kubur Berasap", "We Bought A Zoo" and "Flying Swords of Dragon Gate", while in Singapore, the only new releases are "Don 2", "Rajapattai" and "We Bought A Zoo".
