17 Nov – Within just a week at the local box office, Japanese movie "Death Note: Light Up The New World" certainly lit up the box office with its impressive collection. The third movie in the live-action "Death Note" series, released in Singapore on 10 November, grossed over SGD530,000 in just six days of showing. While the god of Death did not manage to dethrone the magical "Doctor Strange", the latest "Death Note" movie is still 'lightyears' ahead of other current hits such as "Trolls", "Ouija: Origin of Evil" and "Your Name". In its homeland of Japan, the movie has managed to secure the top spot with its ¥458,645,800 (SGD5,947,450) gross on its opening weekend. With the series' proven success, Managing Director of Encore Films, Joyce Lee, is confident that the third "Death Note" movie will be able to cross the SGD1 million mark in Singapore. "The "Death Note" series means a lot to us, and we're very proud that the sequel is still as outstanding as ever after 10 years," said Lee. Despite the 10-year gap between the latest movie and the previous two movies, 2006's "Death Note" and "Death Note 2: The Last Name", the winning streak is maintained by the live-action movie series, which is adapted from the "Death Note" manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. All four movies, including 2008 spin-off "L: Change the World", have grossed over SGD4.4 million combined at the local box office, making the series the box office record holder for Japanese movies in Singapore for the past decade. "Death Note: Light Up The New World" is currently showing in cinemas.
