12 Feb - Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee has recently won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 77th Directors Guild of America (DGA). Accepting the award from his "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" star, Michelle Yeoh, he joked, "This is the first time at this event I have to put on reading glasses, so I guess it is time for the Lifetime Achievement Award. I have received many awards in my career, but this one is most special to me, because it comes from my beloved peers." "The fact that we can gather together in a difficult time to celebrate movies is very touching," he added. "I was born and raised in Taiwan. Standing on the stage now feels like the realisation of the American dream."
Ang said that people's dreams are interconnected and influence each other, and the same is true for film creation. It is the crystallisation of everyone's efforts, coming from the life experiences of different people, and is the result of countless artistes growing and working together with their hearts and souls. During his career, Ang has received international critical and popular acclaim and numerous accolades including three Academy Awards, five BAFTA Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards - Best Foreign Language Film for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2001), and won the Academy Award for Best Director twice for "Brokeback Mountain" (2006) and "Life of Pi" (2013). He also won the Best Film Director Award from the Directors Guild of America.
