3 Apr - Despite previously concluding the story of John Wick, it looks like Lionsgate is not stopping the franchise at four films.

The studio has now revealed that movie number 5 is moving forward in an announcement at the CinemaCon on 1 April. The project is being developed with Thunder Road producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, as well as Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves, who will return as both director and lead actor, respectively.

"Keanu, Chad, Basil and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world," said Lionsgate chairman, Adam Fogelson. "We can't wait for audiences to see where the journey takes us next."

The first film was released in 2014, with Keanu starring as the titular character, a former assassin who is forced to return to the criminal underworld after retiring.

The fourth "John Wick" film made more than USD 440 million when it was released in 2023. The film, which was originally to be the final instalment, ended with Laurence Fishburne's character, Bowery King standing at a grave showing John Wick's name.

However, Lionsgate seemed to be singing a different tune following the success of the fourth movie, with then-Lionsgate chairman Joe Drake saying that there might be a fifth movie.

In addition to the fifth John Wick film, it was also announced that Donnie Yen will be directing and starring in a Caine spin-off, reprising his role as the blind assassin from "John Wick 4."

Lionsgate confirmed the project at CinemaCon and added about Donnie Yen's dual role as star and director. This will be the second spin-off in the "John Wick" franchise following "Ballerina" starring Ana de Armas, which is set for release on 6 June.
