2 Feb – Cathay Cineplexes would be adding four more screens each to Cathay Cineplex e@curve and Cathay Cineplex JB City Square in Malaysia, as well as a new multiplex for Singapore due to open in 2013. The completion dates for the enhancements for Cathay Cineplex e@curve and Cathay Cineplex JB City Square are targeted for August and December 2012 respectively. Not only in Malaysia, but Singapore will also see an addition as Cathay opens its eighth multiplex in Jurong East, Cathay Cineplex Jem, by 2013. The new multiplex will be the cinema chain's first green multiplex as well as the largest one in the suburbs with the most number of screens and seats. With the increased number of screens and a new multiplex in the works, moviegoers can look forward to 24-hour movie screenings on weekends and a wider variety of show sessions. Back in 2007, the former Cathay Cineplex at Prangin Mall had also doubled their screens from four to eight as part of their expansion plans, however the multiplex ceased operations on 13 November 2011 where Lotus Five Star has since taken over. It is believed the closing of the Cathay at Prangin Mall which first commence operations on 27 April 2001, is due to TGV First Avenue's opening early last year which also houses 8 halls making it Cathay's main competition, as both Prangin Mall and First Avenue are back-to-back shopping malls.
