3 Jan – The Cathay Cineplex at 2 Handy Road will resume operations from today onwards, Cathay Cineplexes has announced on its official Facebook page.

The cinema was momentarily closed down over the weekend due to a fire incident.

It will open again to the public from today 3 January 2017 at 6pm.

"Nonetheless, we will continue to offer refunds for tickets booked for shows at The Cathay Cineplex (2 Handy Road) from 3 January 6pm till 4 January 2017 (Wednesday) 11:59pm," the post stated.

Refunds can be done at all seven Cathay Cineplexes, where cinema patrons have to show the ticket stubs. Meanwhile refunds for online bookings will be done directly to the credit card used for the transaction.

Previously, it was revealed that a fire broke out at the cinema at 6pm on Saturday, due to the electricity distribution box catching fire in the projector room of the cinema.

All cinema patrons had to be evacuated from the mall. However, the fire was promptly put out by the SCDF (Singapore Civil Defence Force) and only one Cathay Cineplex staff was sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for inhalation of fumes and is now in stable condition.

There were no other casualties during the incident.

The cinema management could not be reached for comment at the time of writing and investigation on the cause of the fire is still ongoing.
