"Up" balloons to No.1

26 Aug – In the U.S. Brad Pitt's latest movie "Inglourious Basterds" took in over US$37.6 million and over US$27.1 million overseas in its opening week. Directed by Quentin Tarantino, this war flick is scheduled to screen in Singapore on 15 October, while Malaysians will catch it later on 22 October 2009.

Disney/Pixar's animation "Up" rakes in a cumulative gross of US$430mil worldwide thanks to another US$8.7mil at the international box office this weekend according to online tracker Box Office Mojo. The film released in Malaysia on 20 August in three formats: 3-D, digital 2-D and the industry standard 35mm. Featuring a lonely widower who ties helium balloons to his house, the adventure-comedy successfully floats to the top of the box office charts in Malaysia during its opening weekend.

Coming in a close second is the superhero blockbuster "Kanthaswamy" starring Tamil superstar Vikram, who was in Malaysia last week for the film's premiere. Directed by Susi Ganesan, "Kanthaswamy" boasts high production values and beautiful locations including Italy and Mexico to give it a blockbuster feel. Vikram plays the Robin Hood-type character, who takes money from unscrupulous tycoons to help the poor and needy. The film opened to 60 screens across the nation last Friday, topping even Rajnikanth's phenomenal "Sivaji" (which opened in 2007 to 55 screens).
