Viggo Mortensen to star in movie about Tham Luang Cave Rescue



12 Mar – Viggo Mortensen has been cast as part of the ensemble for Ron Howard's "Thirteen Lives" - the highly-anticipated movie about the Tham Luang Cave Rescue involving 12 Thai boys and their coach who were trapped inside a cave three years ago.



The actor will play one of the heroic rescuers, Richard Stanton, who took part in the dangerous operation, aside from fellow actors Colin Farrell and Joel Edgerton (who will play cave divers John Volanthen and Dr Richard Harris respectively). They will be working alongside Thai actors including "Bad Genius" actor Teeradon "James" Supapunpinyo and "Malila" star Weir Sukollawat - the latter to play Thai Navy SEAL Saman Kunan.

Other cast members include "The Serpent" actors Thiraphat Sajakul and Sahajak Boonthanakit, Vithaya Pansringarm ("The Prey"), Nophand Boonyai ("Only God Forgives"), as well as English star Tom Bateman, American actor Paul Gleeson, and Australian actor Lewis Fitz-Gerald.

The movie will be shot in Australia this month, with the support of boththe Australian and Thailand governments. "Gladiator" screenwriter William Nicholson writes the film.

Back in 2018, a news from Thailand attracted the world's attention, after 12 boys and their football coach went missing and were subsequently found trapped in a flooded, impenetrable Tham Luang Nang No cave system in the Chiang Rai province. It took a whole village and volunteers from around the world 18 days to get to them, including British cave divers John Volanthen, Richard Stanton, Jason Mallinson, Chris Jewell, Josh Bratchley, Connor Roe, and Vernon Unsworth; Australian cave diver Dr. Richard Harris and Thai native Thanet Natisri.
